In Frida Permutations, theatre artist Veronica Santoyo explores the life of famous Mexican painter Frida Kahlo. With nothing but a projector, an easel, and some props, Frida and Veronica’s lives are shared through stories, photographs, paintings, historical accounts, scholarship, music, costumes, movement, and pop tchotchkes. From Frida’s bus accident, to her marriage to muralist Diego Rivera, from Veronica’s family, to her love of theatrical story telling... many of the most important moments in the lives of these two women are accounted for. This play celebrates the act of creation and the experiences that contribute to lives well lived.
About the Artist(s): Veronica Santoyo and David Taylor Little are professors and artists teaching and creating in The Department of Theater and Dance at Ball State University in Muncie, IN. They began creating "Frida Permutations" before the pandemic and finished their first production of it in the Indianapolis Fringe Festival in August 2025. They created Verda Productions so as to continue sharing this work around the country. Verda is an amalgamation of Veronica and David's first names, but also an approximation of the Spanish word for truth: verdad.
In Frida Permutations, theatre artist Veronica Santoyo explores the life, creativity, loves, passions, losses, and wide-ranging experiences of famous Mexican painter Frida Kahlo. But it’s through this lens that we also gain an understanding of what drives Veronica in her own journey through life, and why she has such a deep personal connection to Kahlo. This all works to remind the audience how art affects each of us and can help develop our own understanding of the world as well as how we can embrace our own life experiences.
